A Week Without Social Media

Posted in Social Media

Yes, shocking, but true. I am going to go a week without social media. As of the time of this blog post I will not login and check any of my messages, comments, tweets, or updates for 1 whole week.  I will still be reachable via txt, phone, and email. I will also be checking comments on this blog.

Now why in blue blazes am I doing this?

1.) I'm addicted, I check my various social websites at least 75 times a day (not that is bad), as sometimes clients msg me on Twitter, friends leave comments about plans for the evening on Facebook, and I am reminded about music events on MySpace- but I want to try and obtain that information not via a social website and see if I like it more or less.

2.) I want to mix my routines up and break patterns. This has always been helpful and opened my mind to new possibilities and ideas- many of which were out of the bounds of the previous pattern.

3.) I want to challenge myself to an exercise of discipline and will, which is always a good thing.

4.) A lot of people I know went to Burning Man, as much I dislike and may never go, I do love the sheer aspect of taking one out of ones surroundings to have a profound experience.

I plan to journal about any differences I notice in my life as a result of changing this routine and at the end I will write a blog post that recaps the whole experience. If the results are decidedly positive I will definitely make social media less of a priority in my life.

In closing I will state: I love social media- I think it has tremendous potential to reshape the world in a multitude of ways that we've barely begun to explore. I also worry about social media- I worry that we are stuck in patterns that keep the pioneers from probing for how deep this mine really goes.

Wish me luck!
