Emergence by Steven Johnson is one of those books that shook up how I see the world. My perception of everything- from music trends, to social circles, to career choices have all under gone an earthquake of realignment since reading Emergence. I have found new inspiration for my day job as web designer/developer, and look with new eyes regarding what I expect the future to be like.
If your interests are as varied as the title (ants, cities, software, and brains) you will absolutely love this book. If you are you are skeptical that those four things aren't related at all and this sounds like some new age hippy bilge you need to read this book. If you are not so polarized I highly suggest purchasing and reading this book as soon as humanly possible. Prepare to have your mind blown.
